Renew, Refresh, Revive: A Guide to Spring Cleaning Rugs

Rug Blog Header

The scent of Spring is in the air and with that your que to Spring Clean!

Spring cleaning symbolizes a fresh start as winter yields to the rejuvenating spirit of spring. Rugs are just one thing that benefit from a good cleaning, but often take a back seat. If given the time, a RUG REFRESH, can work wonders to revive and refresh your home.

Maintaining the cleanliness of your rugs is paramount for ensuring a healthy indoor environment. Dust, dirt, and microorganisms often accumulate in rug fibers, posing health risks, particularly for those with respiratory issues or allergies. Regular cleaning not only enhances hygiene but also extends the lifespan of your rugs, making them a valuable asset in your home. Sometimes spring cleaning even brings about ideas of restyling and redesigning your space, so you may want to get rid of your old rug and bring something new in altogether. Whether you are maintaining your current rug or exploring options for a new one, we’ve got all of the details you’ll want to know!

Regular vacuuming helps eliminate surface dirt and keeps your rug looking fresh. If your rug has been exposed to odors, especially due to pets or dining mishaps, sprinkle baking soda generously over the rug, allowing it to sit for about five minutes. The baking soda works as a natural deodorizer and can easily be vacuumed. For a deep clean, take your rug outdoors if possible. Use a broom to beat out any excess dirt. This is effective in removing deeper dirt and dust that a vacuum might miss.

Polypropylene is becoming one of the most popular fabrics when it comes to rugs because it is water and mildew repellent as well as stain resistant. Our indoor/outdoor rug collection is made of 100% polypropylene. Indoor rugs are typically made with a polyester and polypropylene blend, to give it a softer feel. Polypropylene rugs can withstand bleach, making cleaning them a breeze! You can mix a solution of one-part bleach to five parts water, then apply it to the stained area with a sponge or cloth. You can also use a gentle soap combined with an equal mixture of white vinegar and water.

Remember, when using any rug cleaning solutions, always test the solution in a small spot on the rug first to ensure compatibility. You want to scrub the solution into the rug until suds appear, then let it sit for five to ten minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water.

Cleaning a rug made of 100% polyester requires a slightly more delicate touch with more instant action because it does not have the materials to make it stain resistant. When you spill something on the rug, you’ll want to clean it as soon as possible to avoid any permanent damage. Spot clean immediately with a gentle soap combined with an equal mixture of white vinegar and water.

Machine washable rugs are also growing in popularity and are a practical choice. Most washable rugs are made with 100% polyester, allowing for maximum cleanability while also providing the softness you want in a rug. Runners and smaller rugs can quickly be washed in your washing machine. Bigger rugs can be brought outside and cleaned with a hose before being hung to dry. The cleanability of these rugs is especially beneficial for households with kids, as the rugs can withstand spills and stains, providing a play area that is easy to clean when you need to. Placing washable rugs under dining tables is advantageous, simplifying cleanup after meals and ensuring the rug remains an integral part of the decor.

Rugs made with rayon/viscose require a much more delicate approach, as they are sensitive to water. You want to avoid any prolonged exposure to moisture. Dry cleaning is the recommended method for these rugs. Take the rug to a professional dry cleaner to ensure proper care and prevent damage. It's crucial to follow the specific cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer for each type of rug to preserve their appearance and longevity.
